After winning five national amateur championships, Felix made his professional debut in 1990 at the age of 17. He first fought Angel Romero and won via knockout during the second round. He would continue this streak with nine knockouts out of his first 10 fights. After a bout with Jake Rodriguez, Trinidad would win by unanimous decision but an injury suffered to his right hand side-lined him for several months. In 1992 he fought Raul Gonzales, putting his streak at 14-0 with 11 knockouts.
In 1993, Felix fought Maurice Blocker in San Diego for the IBF welterweight championship, winning in the second round, earning him a championship and a deal with Showtime to broadcast his next fights. In the next three years, he would successfully defend his belt against Hector Camacho and then against the 56-0 Yori Boy Campas, breaking his nose in the fourth round leading to victory. He would once again face an undefeated fighter, Oba Carr and would knock him down multiple times, earning a technical knockout victory. After these series of fights, Trinidad would successfully defend his title for another four years, defeating Mahenge Zulu and then Pernell Whitaker which marked his 13th successful defense. In 1999, he was scheduled to fight Oscar De la Hoya, supposedly a big fight although many believed it would be lackluster, however, Felix earned a controversial majority decision.
The following year, he vacated the welterweight championship and moved up to the junior middleweight division to fight WBA champion David Reid. Despite the bout being close during the early rounds, Trinidad assumed control and would eventually win. His following fight would be a unification battle against Fernando Vargas, and despite being knocked down during the early rounds, he rallied and would defeat the exhausted Vargas via technical knockout. He then moved up again to the middleweight division, to fight WBA champion William Joppy which he won in a convincing fashion. Afterwards, he was scheduled to fight Bernard Hopkins, but it was postponed due to the September 11 attacks. The fight was held at a later date, and reached twelve rounds before Trinidad’s father entered, the ring which signalled Felix’s first loss, via technical knockout. After winning against Hacine Cherefi, he would announce his retirement at a record of 41-1 with 34 knockouts.
He then returned to fight in 2004 against Ricardo Mayorga, and although Mayorga controlled the early rounds, Trinidad rallied to score several knockdowns, earning him a technical knockout victory. After fighting and losing against Winky Wright, Trinidad was noticeably off his game. After the bout, his father would retire and Felix also took a short break from fights before returning in 2008 to fight Roy Jones Jr. This time, Felix controlled the early rounds, but control would shift to Jones in the middle to later rounds, earning him a victory by unanimous decision. After being inactive for two years, Trinidad decided that he would retire, and would only make sparse appearances in boxing and wrestling related events.
For his personal life, it is known that he is married to Sharon Santiago and they have four daughters. Felix also has another daughter from a separate relationship.
