Gramm grew up in Rochester, where he attended Gates-Chili High School. Upon matriculating in 1968, he enrolled in Rochester’s Monroe Community College.

His musical career began in his teenage years, playing in local bands, such as St. James Infirmary, PHFFT and Poor Heart. He later became the front man for the band called Black Sheep; signing with the Chrysalis label, the band released their first single “Stick Around” in 1973. The following year they signed with Capitol Records, releasing two new albums, “Black Sheep” and “Encouraging Words”, before their disbandment in 1975. Not long after, Gramm met guitarist Mick Jones who made him the lead singer of a new band he was forming, called Foreigner. The band went on to release a number of hits which virtually dominated the charts, such as “Hot Blooded”, “Feels Like the First Time”, “Cold as Ice”, “Blue Morning, Blue Day”, “Dirty White Boy”, “Urgent”, “Break It Up” and “Say You Will”, with Gramm performing vocals in all of them. He also co-wrote most of the band’s songs, including the hit ballads “Waiting for a Girl Like You” and “I Want to Know What Love Is”. He became one of the most successful rock vocalists of the late ’70s and ’80s, which contributed considerably to his net worth.

However, as Gramm and Jones had different visions regarding the band’s future music style, their conflicts grew, which led Gramm to release a solo album called “Ready or Not” in 1987, gaining critical acclaim – the album’s single “Midnight Blue” became a top five hit. Shortly after he rejoined Foreigner, and thet released their album “Inside Information”. He also maintained his solo success, and in 1989 released his second solo album, “Long Hard Rock”, containing the hit singles “Just Between You and Me” and “True Blue Love”, intensifying his wealth.

He left Foreigner, and later formed the band Shadow King, which released a self titled album in 1991. Gramm returned to Foreigner the following year, for the release of the 1995 album “Mr. Moonlight”. In 1996, he performed backing vocals on a cover version of “I Want to Know What Love Is” for the Australian singer Tina Arena, with the song becoming a major hit throughout Europe. He went on to provide vocals for the Christian rock band Petra’s album “Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus” in 1997. However…

… the same year he was diagnosed with brain tumor, and although the tumor was benign, the surgery and recovery affected his musical capabilities. Fortunately, his health soon recovered and Gramm went on with his career, leaving Foreigner again in 2003 to form a new band called the Lou Gramm Band, playing a retrospective of Gramm’s work with Foreigner as well as his solo material. In the following years, Gramm has been performing and touring with the band, which was later renamed to Lou Gramm the voice of Foreigner.

In 2013 Gramm was inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In his personal life, Gramm has been married to Robyn Grammatico, with whom he has four children.
