Robert William Lamm was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on October 13, 1944. As a child, he was interested in music, and his parents were an early influence on him as they had a collection of jazz records.
During his teenage years, Lamm used to perform in a boy’s choir at Grace Episcopal Church in Brooklyn Heights. According to him, that was the first time he got some musical training and was introduced to different kinds of music from the middle ages to the 20th Century composers.
When Lamm was 15 years old, his parents got divorced, and later his mother remarried, resulting in Lamm moving to Chicago, Illinois. He studied art, specifically drawing and painting at high school, but later attended Roosevelt University in Chicago to learn music.
