Greg Louganis was born on 29th January 1960 in El Cajon, California. His biological parents put him for adoption when he was eight months to his adoptive parents, Frances and Peter Louganis. His biological father was Fauvale Lutu, and he reconnected with him in 1984, and later in 2017, he reconnected with his biological mother in 2017 after conducting a DNA test and also with the help of his half-siblings.

He was into dancing, acrobatics, and gymnastics when he was 18 months. At three years, he was already giving a public performance. He was diagnosed with asthma and allergies and was encouraged to continue with the gymnastics and dances in order to curb the problem. He began diving lessons at the age of nine.

Louganis attended Santa Ana High School as well as Valhalla High School and Mission Viejo High School. He later attended the University of Miami, majoring in drama. He transferred to the University of California and graduated in 1983 with a degree in theatre and also dancing. He continued diving while at the University.

Louganis is openly gay and had a relationship with R. James Babbitt, although the relationship was abusive and took 80% of his earnings.
