Evans has competed in five professional martial arts fights, in which he won all the five under the tutelage of future UFC Hall of Famer Dan Severn in 2004. After wrestling out from Niagara-Wheatfield High School in New York, Evans made twice his way to the state finals tournament by winning all-state honors and weight classes for his country. In 1997, at 145 pounds, Evans was placed 4th in the state. In 1998, at 171 pounds, he was again placed 4th in the country. In 2000, he was the champion of the 165-pound weight class for the same tournament.
Evans competed for Michigan State in the Big Ten Conference on the NCAA Division I during his early career. He finished in 4th position in the 2002 conference championships, where he lost a decision to a UFC competitor Jacob Volkmann. He won the Big Ten Championship that took place in 2003 and later came 3rd in the same.
