Weir was born on JULY 2, 1984, to John and Patti weir in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. He is the firstborn in the family of four. He has a younger brother, Brian “Boz” Weir. He was brought up Quarryville, Pennsylvania, a rural town in Amish, dominated central Pennsylvania. As a young boy, Johnny competed in English saddle events and was an accomplished rider by the time he was nine years old. He won several Equestrian competitions. Johnny also competed in the Devon Horse Show with his “dapple-gray Arabian horse- cross Shetland pony named Shadow.”
Weir’s family later relocated to Little Britain, Connecticut, so that he could train. According to him, horse riding was only a way maker for his great career, figure skating, for it gave him body awareness. Johnny began skating as early as the age of 12 years. In 1996, his family moved to Newark, Delaware, so that he could be near his training rink and coach.

Weir’s career is a result of the motivation he got after watching Kristi Yamaguchi win a Gold Medal at the Albertville Winter Olympics in 1992. After learning how to skate, he gained further motivation to do figure skating after watching Oksana Baiul compete at the 1994 Winter Olympics.by the age of 12, Olsen was performing single Axels after taking lessons from University of Delaware. Weir started training under Coach Priscilla Hill at the age of 12.
His coach, Priscilla hill, paired him with Jodi Rudden to help him focus on other aspects of figure skating, such as spins, stroking, and artistry rather than jumping.
During the 1997-1998 season, Weir won regional and other minor competitions as a novice and came in third place in the novice division at the U.S. national championships. At the 2000 U.S. nationals, Weir was the only competitor in the junior division who attempted a triple pixel in the short program, but despite falling, the judges put him in the first place.
Weir was the 10th American to win at the Junior Worlds and the first American male skater since Derrick Delmore won in 1998. In the 2002-2003 season, Weir skated in one international competition, the Finlandia Trophy, and withdrew from the Cup of Russia. He also resigned from the 2003 U.S. championship in Dallas.
Despite having an ugly phase during the 2002-2003 season, Weir made a great come back in the 2003-2004 season.
