Edwin John Fisher was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to a Russian Jewish immigrant couple Gitte, a.k.a. Katherine or “Katie and Joseph Tisch. Subsequently, his father’s surname was changed from Tisch to Fisher by the census of 1940. He was fourth in number out of seven kids in the family.
Fisher’s talent as a singer was uncovered at a very young age, and he would win numerous amateur competitions. He dropped out of high school to pursue a singing career after he had become a local superstar.

In 1951, Fisher was selected by the U.S. Army, where he was an official vocalist for the United States Army Band. Two years later, in 1953, he sang in popular nightclubs and different television-series, out of which the most hyped was Coke Time with Eddie Fisher for the next four years.
