Reiner was born to Irving, a watchmaker, and Bessie Reiner. His parents were Jewish immigrants. His father was from Austria, and his mother was from Romania. His older brother Charlie served in World War II, and his ashes are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Charlie read in the New York Daily News about a free dramatic workshop being put on by the Works Progress Administration when he was just 16. He then told Carl about it. Reiner performed in several Broadway musicals and had played the lead role in Call Me Mister. In 1950, he was cast by Max Leibman in Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows, where he appeared on air in skits while also worked alongside writers, such as Mel Brooks and Neil Simon. Reiner also worked on Caesar’s Hour. There he worked with Brooks, Simon, Woody Allen, Larry Gelbart, Mel Tolkin, Mike Stewart, and Sheldon Keller.
In 1960, Reiner shared the screen with Brooks on a comedy show named as The Steve Allen Show. Reiner played the straight man role in 2000’s “Year Old Man.” Brooks’s biographer, William Holtzman, called a 12-minute act in “an ingenious jazz improvisation,” while Gerald Nachman described Reiner’s part in guiding the act. The act gave Brooks “identity as a comic performer for the first time,” stated Reiner.
