Early Life & Biography

Born to a lower-middle-class family in October 1952, most of Harry’s childhood was spent performing basic magic tricks on the streets of Chicago, New York, St. Louis, and New Orleans. His father and mother separated, and to make ends meet, and his mother took to prostitution.

He moved back with his father at the age of 16, to Los Angeles, California. It was here that he started learning the skills more attentively. He even joined the Dante Magic Club and started earning as a magician as early as 17. He studied at Buena Park High School and later graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1970. Post his graduation, he took up magic more seriously, and between 1971 and 1976, he lived in Ashland, Oregon, performing magic and working with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Finally, when he was performing at Hollywood’s famed Magic Castle Hotel, his talent was recognized, and he got a chance in Hollywood.

Personal Life

At the age of 25 yr, Anderson married Leslie Pollack, who was just a year younger to him. Leslie and Harry had two children together – Dashiell Anderson and Eva Fay Anderson. Close to the age of fifty, while in New Orleans, Anderson met Elizabeth Morgan, a bartender. The age gap of 21 years or the marital status of Anderson did not seem to stop the two from falling in love. Soon Leslie and Harry filed for divorce, which was finalized in 1999. Immediately after his divorce, in 2000, Harry married Elizabeth.

In 2002 Elizabeth and Harry opened a small curio shop in the French Quarter called “Spade & Archer Curiosities by Appointment,” but later shortened the name to “Sideshow.” Here the two sold various “magic, curiosities, and Apocrypha.” In 2005, Anderson opened a nightclub in the French Quarter called Oswald’s Speakeasy, where he also performed a show called Wise Guy.

However, when hurricane Katrina struck, their shop was ruined, and they had to sell Oswald’s Speakeasy. This episode also led Harry to openly criticize the government, especially the then-mayor, C. Ray Nagin. The couple moved to Asheville, North Carolina, in 2006.

Anderson was both a performer and a magician. He appeared on several episodes of Saturday Night Live. He also starred in Harry “The Hat” Gittes on several seasons of the television sitcom Cheers, and later as Judge Harry Stone on the long-running sitcom Night Court as well as on The Tonight Show. In 1990, he starred in the television adaptation of Stephen King‘s It, playing the character of Richie Tozier.

From 1993 to 1997, Anderson starred in the television sitcom Dave’s World, a semi-biographical take on the humorist Dave Barry. He also appeared on a special episode of The Science of Magic in 1997. In 2000 Anderson was also seen as the host of CBS’s classic panel game show What’s My Line?

The horrendous hurricane Katrina that literally massacred New Orleans prompted him to participate in Hexing a Hurricane, a documentary about the first six months in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.  Towards the latter half of his life, Anderson appeared in television comedy series such as in Comedy Bang! Bang! and Gotham Comedy Live (2014). His last performance was as Professor Kaman in the film, A Matter of Faith.

Magic was still his first love, and as a magician, Anderson toured extensively performing for clubs and broadcasts.
