On March 26, 1934, Alan Wolf Arkin was born to David I. Arkin and Beatrice (nee Wortis) in the city of Brooklyn, New York. His father was a painter and writer, whereas his mother was a teacher. He was raised in a Jewish family, but no emphasis on religion. His grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, Russia, and Germany.
His parents moved to Los Angeles when Arkin was just 11. He attended Los Angeles City College from 1951 to 1953. He also went to Bennington College, and while there, he and his two friends formed the folk music group “The Tarriers,” Arkin played guitar and sang.

Alan Arkin has been married three times, two out of those marriages have ended up in divorce, he first married Jeremy Yaffe in 1955-1961. Together they had two sons Adam Arkin who was born on August 19, 1956, and Mathew Arkin, who was born on March 21, 1960.
He then married an actress- screenwriter Barbara Dana from 1964 to 1994. They got a son together called Anthony (Tony) Dana Arkin. They lived in Chappaqua, New York.
