Dayton was born and raised in a family of four children among whom he was the eldest, and was born on January 26, 1947, in Minneapolis. His parents included his mother, Gwendolen May (Brandt), and father, Bruce Bliss Dayton. His family had a chain market, Dayton’s department store chain, which was founded by his great-grandfather George Dayton. Mark Dayton was raised in Long Lake, Minnesota, and got inducted to Blake School in Minneapolis, where he completed his graduation.

Career
After completing his college, Dayton went to Lower East Side of New York City, where he worked as a teacher for three years. After this, he worked as the chief financial officer of a social service agency in Boston for four years till 1975. During this period, he also got the oppurtunity to work with Minnesota Governor Rudy Perpichand U.S. Senator Walter Mondale as he became their advisor in making lawful decisions.
After this, Dayton became the Economic Development Commissioner of Minnesota in 1978. To become the senator, he had to win against U.S. Senator Eugene McCarthy in the Democratic primary.
