Koppel was born in Nelson, England, as an only child. His parents were German Jews who had fled Germany following Adolf Hitler’s ascent to power and the development of Nazism. Koppel was born in 1940, only a few months after his father was imprisoned.

Before working as a copyboy at The New York Times and as a writer at WMCA Radio in New York, Koppel worked as a teacher for a short time. In June 1963, he was employed by ABC Radio News as the youngest correspondent ever, working on the daily Flair Reports program.
