Early Life
Al was born on October 3, 1954, in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York City to Ada (née Richards) and Alfred Charles Sharpton Sr. When Al was 4-years old, he preached his first sermon on his tour with gospel singer, Mahalia Jackson.
In 1963, Al’s father left Ada to have a relationship with his half-sister. Ada worked as a maid but, had to depend on welfare and move from middle-class Hollis, Queens to public housing in Brownsville of Brooklyn. Al graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn and studied at Brooklyn College for two years until 1975. Al married Kathy Jordan, and they have two children named Dominique and Ashley.

Jesse Jackson appointed Al to serve as a young director of Operation Breadbasket in New York City (1969). Al founded the National Youth Movement and raised resources for youth (1971). He was the youth director for the presidential campaign of African-American Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm (1972). Al served as James Brown’s tour manager (1973-1980).
Al protested against racial, religious discrimination and became known nationally. On December 20, 1986, in Howard Beach of Queens, some white men attacked three African-American men who were chased onto the Belt Parkway. There, Michael Griffith was killed by a passing motorist.

In December 1998, police shot Tyisha Miller, a 19-year-old African-American woman, in central Riverside, California. Tyisha was found unconscious in a locked car with a flat tire and engine running. Her car was parked at a local gas station. Her relatives called 911 when the Riverside Police Department officers responded and discovered a gun on her lap.
