Smith has three siblings, a brother Josh, and two sisters, Abbey and MacKenzie. Smith grew up in La Mesa, California. Alex had his schooling at Helix High School, where his father was an executive director. During his junior and senior years, Smith, as a starter, led his team, Helix Scotties to a record of 25–1, including two San Diego CIF section championships.

In the history of San Diego CIF, Smith broke a record by throwing for six touchdowns in one game and recorded the 2nd highest completion percentage. When Alex was 12 years old, one of his great-grandfathers, who was an Austrian immigrant of Serbian descent, immigrated to the U.S. from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Smith played for the Utah Utes when he was the student of the University of Utah, wearing number 11.
