Career
On Oct 11, 1991, Anita Hill called to testify against Clarence Thomas for sexual harassment. She stated that he sexually harassed her while he was her supervisor at the Department of Education. She explained that even after being sexually harassed, she still followed Thomas to serve as his assistant in his second job because it was her ambition to work in the position she was at that time, she tolerated the harassment to work in that position. Later she realized that it was a poor judgment from her side.
Anita rejected Thomas after he asked her out socially many times. Thomas didn’t stop there after being rejected; he discussed sexual topics at the workplace.
Many people came to Hill’s support. Rumour has it that four female witnesses even came to testify, but they were not called to testify.
Hill’s allegations and honesty were questioned by Thomas’s supporters as she raised her voice after ten years of Thomas’s alleged behavior. They also pointed out that if she was uncomfortable with his behavior, then why did she followed him to his second job. They also proved that she had personal contacts with him and blamed her for falsely accusing Thomas. They said that she did this because she was jealous and want to seek revenge from him by destroying him and accusing him of such a horrendous act.
Hill opposed these allegations and said that she only followed him because she was scared that Anita would lose the position Anita was in at that time if Anita raised her voice and Anita also stated that she had only two phone calls with Thomas that was not important and had met with personally twice after leaving Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
Thomas considered Hill a friend and felt betrayed when she made these allegations. He called her a traitor in his autobiography, My grandfather’s Son. He even said her work was mediocre and was touchy. Hill denied the accusations and said in one of her interviews that she would not allow herself to be reinvented by his anger. In Oct 2010, Virginia, Thomas’s wife, asked Hill to apologize for her testimony, but Hill said that she would stand by her statement no matter what happens.
Hill resigned from the University of Oklahoma in Oct 1996. Positioned as a visiting scholar at the Institute for the Study of Social Change at the University of California in January 1997. In 1995, Hill, along with Emma Coleman Jordan, edited ‘Race, Gender and Power in America: The legacy of Hill-Thomas Hearings.’ On Dec 16, 2017, Hill got selected as the lead charge against sexual harassment in the entertainment industry.
