Born on 30 December 1961 in Trelawny Parish Jamaica, Gloria Johnson, a cook and a waitress and father Ben Johnson, a telephone repairman. He graduated from Yorkdale High, Canada, and finished his college from Centennial College in Ontario, Canada.
When he was 14 years old, he migrated to Canada. He joined Scarborough Optimists Track and field club and received his training from the 100 meters field champion Charlie Francis. Charlie trained him immensely and helped him to improve his time from 11 seconds to 10.62 seconds between 1978-1980.
