Benjamin Cameron Wallace was born to his parents on 10th September 1974 in White Hall, Alabama, as the tenth born. He grew up in a big family made of twelve children. He received his high school education in Hayneville, where he was in their basketball team. It was Charles Oakley who discovered him in 1991 at a basketball camp and recommended him to Virginia Union University.
At Cuyahoga Community College is where he played is his first college basketball impressing his coach. He would later transfer to Virginia Union, where he continued with playing basketball as well as study criminal justice. While playing for Virginia Union Panthers, he led the team to the final four of Division II. Wallace moved to Italy after college to try out with Viola Reggio Calabria after being undrafted for long.

Ben Wallace is a family man and is married to his wife Chanda, whom together are blessed with three children, two boys Ben Jr and Bryce and Paige, their only daughter. When growing up, it was his seven older brothers who trained him on how to play basketball.
In 2011 he was arrested and arraigned for Driving under Influence (DUI) and being in possession of a concealed weapon. He was found guilty on both counts and one year of probation. In March 2014, he again found himself on the wrong side of the law after leaving an accident scene. He was sentenced to a one-year jail term, all days suspended except two.
