Bryan Jay Singer was born on September 17, 1965, in New York City. He was adopted by Grace Sinden, who is an environmental activist and Norbert Dave Singer, a corporate executive. He spent most of his childhood days in West Windsor Township, New Jersey.
As a teenager, Singer started experimenting with photography and made 8mm films. He completed his graduation from West Windsor-Plainsboro High School in 1984. Later, he went to the School of Visual Arts in New York to learn filmmaking for two years. He also did a critical studies program from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles.

Bryan Singer started his filmmaking career in 1998 when he directed a short film called Lion’s Den.
