Christiane Amanpour was born on the 12th of January 1958 in Ealing, Middlesex, England to parents, Patricia Amanpour and Mohammad Amanpour. Both of her parents were from Tehran, but her father was a Muslim while her mother was Catholic. Although she completed a great part of her primary school education in Iran, she was sent to boarding school in England at the age of 11.
She attended Holy Cross Convent before joining New Hall School at 16 years of age. Her family returned to England shortly after the start of the Islamic Revolution. After completing her school education, she moved to the U.S. to study journalism at the University of Rhode Island. While studying there, she also worked at the news department at WBRU-FM and as an electronic graphics designer at WJAR. In 1983, she graduated from the university with a B.A. degree in journalism with the highest honors.

Christiane Amanpour married James Rubin in 1998. James is a former US Assistant Secretary of State and has also acted as the spokesman for the US State Department during the Clinton administration. In 2000, she gave birth to their son, Darius John Rubin. However, the couple got divorced in 2018.
