He won the first title of his professional tenure on April 28, 1967, defeating Don McAteer with the fifth-round technical knockout. On September 28, 1968, he knocked his opponent Forest Ward down three consecutive times to trigger an automatic stoppage.
He challenged then WBC and WBA heavyweight champion Mohammad Ali for the World’s heavyweight title. They met on 24 March of the same year, in Ohio. Ali dominated most of the fight, but in the ninth round, Chuck Wepner knocked him down. But in the last round, a twist came, and Ali had won the fight.
