Crystal Gayle was born on January 9, 1951, in Paintsville, Kentucky. Her mother was Clara Marie and her father Melvin Theodore Ted Webb, who was a miner and a farmer. She was the last of the eight children born to her mother. The family moved to Wabash, Indiana, when Crystal Gayle was four years old. Her father died when she was eight years old.
She started singing early to guests who visited them. She learned the guitar and used to sing as a backup singer in her brother’s band.
