Early Life & Biography
McDaniels was born and raised in Hollis, Queens. Sadly, his mother was not married and surrendered him to the New York Foundling home and was a ward of the Foundling, in foster care, until placed with the McDaniels and eventually adopted by them. Darryl attended Rice High School in Manhattan and later enrolled in St. John’s University in Queens.
McDaniels developed his interest in hip hop music after listening to recordings of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. In 1978, McDaniels learned to D.J. by himself in the basement of his parents’ home. He took made use of the turntables and mixer that he bought with his older brother, Alford, after having a comic book sale in their neighborhood. It was during that time that he adopted the stage name “Grandmaster Get High.”

Career
In the event of his newly developed passion, Run encouraged McDaniels to rap rather than D.J. With time, McDaniels preferred rapping than mixing records, and adopted the nickname of “Easy D.” In 1981, he dropped the “Easy D” and took up “DMcD” and then to the shorter “D.M.C..”
In 1984, they released their self-titled debut album and became very successful in the hip-hop industry. Fortunately, the group’s success continued to grow and reached its peak with its third album Raising Hell, making Run-D.M.C. the most popular hip-hop group at the time.

In 1997, McDaniels began to develop a deep depression after being extremely unhappy with the rigorous routine of touring and performing, and with being separated from his wife and newborn son. Thus, he developed a heavy dependence on drugs and alcohol to ease the pain.
Additionally, McDaniels noticed his voice was giving out while on tour and was later diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia, a vocal disorder that causes involuntary spasms of the larynx muscles.
VH1 premiered the documentary titled D.M.C.: My Adoption Journey In February 2006, a program that ended with McDaniels reuniting with his birth mother.
McDaniels, in 2015, worked with the band Generation Kill on a project entitled D.M.C. Generation Kill, which was produced by former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal.
D.M.C. made a cameo appearance during a parody of Run D.M.C.’s “Christmas in Hollis” in December 2016.
On 17 February 2016, D.M.C. featured on the heavy metal band Solus Deus EP as a guest vocalist. In 2017, as well, he starred in Italian rapper’s Caparezza released his studio album titled Prisoner 709.
