David Boes was born on March 11, 1941, in Sycamore, Illinois, in a farming community. His parents were teachers. He has dyslexia and found it difficult to read or write. Boies’s mother used to read stories to him, and he used to memorize it as he could not follow the words in the book.
When he was 13 years old, his family moved to California, where he attended Fullerton Union High School. Boes earned his B.S. degree from Northwestern University in 1964, a J.D. degree from Yale Law School in 1966, and an LL.M. degree from New York University School of Law 1967. David Boies started his career as an attorney at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in 1966. He became the partner of the law firm in 1973. Four years later, he left Cravath when one of their major clients objected to his representation for the New York Yankees.
Within 24 hours of leaving the firm, he founded his own legal firm named Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP. His first case was of music streaming company Napster which he lost.
