Dean Ray Koontz was born in Everett, Pennsylvania, on July 9, 1945, to his parents Florence (née Logue) and Raymond Koontz. As a child, he was regularly abused by his father, who was an alcoholic.
He went to the Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, where he won a fiction competition sponsored by the American lifestyle magazine, The Atlantic. He graduated in the year 1967. After the completion of graduation, he became an English teacher at Mechanicsburg High School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
During the 1960s, he also worked for the non-profit organization, Appalachian Poverty Program, which helped poor people. While he was in college, he converted into Catholicism.

Koontz married his wife Gerda Ann Cerra in the year 1966. However, they do not have any children of their own. He is a dog lover and has adopted many dogs in his lifetime. In 2008, he adopted a dog whom he named, Anna. In 2016, he adopted a new dog, Elsa. He resides with his wife and dogs in Newport Coast, California, behind the gates of Pelican Hills.
