Dennis was born in San Mateo, California, and he is the son of Gladys, who is a house cleaner, and homemaker and his father are Charles Whitney Haysbert, Sr. who is a deputy sheriff and airline security guard. He has eight other siblings in which two are sisters, and there are six brothers.
He graduated from San Mateo High School in 1972, and due to his height, he was offered an athletic scholarship, but instead, he chose to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He later appeared on the screen for the first time in 1978 in Lou Grant.
