After Aviles died in a shooting with the police, they took over the drug trading routes.

Career
After graduating in college, Felix began his career as Mexican federal police, where he was stationed as a bodyguard of his godfather Celis who was the then Sinaloa’s governor. He later quit, joining the Aviles criminal organization, where he was responsible for corrupting the police. Together with his colleagues Rafael Caro and Earnest Camilo took over the Aviles drug cartel after Aviles died in a shooting with the police.
Because of so many drug interdictions in Florida, many Columbian drug cartels began targeting Mexico as their original shipment. Felix was introduced to these cartels by Juan Matta, who had previously introduced Aviles to them. Unlike Aviles, who had requested for money, Felix asked for 5% of the cocaine being transported to the U.S. Because of his full range connection at the U.S border, Felix made a lot of profit from the cocaine business. It is said that he and his two associates would make over $5billion in a year. In the 80’s the organization led by Felix would have almost taken over the whole of Mexico.
Kiki Camarena, an undercover DEA agent, managed to infiltrate so deep into the drug trafficking organization, and his main aim was to get close to Felix Gallardo. In 1984, Camarena gave the location of one of the ranches owned by the organization, which had been protected by the Mexican Dis Intelligent agents, and the soldiers burned property that was estimated to be worth $8 billion.
The selling out of the organization to the military brought the attention of Felix. He ordered the kidnapping of Camarena. On 7 February 1985, KiKi was kidnapped as he tried to escape to the U.S. He was tortured for about 30 hours before being killed on 9 February 1985. The killing of Kiki brought up the largest DEA homicides in Mexico that led to the arrest of both Ernesto and Rafael.
In 1989, Felix was arrested after he had moved his family to Guadalajara and was charged with murder, violent crimes, and drug smuggling. While still in jail, he would still conduct his drug business. In 1990 he was sentenced to 37 years in prison and transferred to the maximum prison.
In 2013, his health began failing him, which led him to petition for a house arrest so that he could be able to celebrate his 70th birthday with his family but was later denied. In December 2014, he was moved to a medium-security prison in Guadalajara. The Mexico court also denied him a house arrest petition that he had petitioned on 20 February 2019.
