As a child, he was encouraged by his grandmother to build small cities out of small pieces of wood. His family moved to the U.S., where he started working as a delivery truck driver as well as studying at Los Angeles City College, eventually to graduate from the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture.

After that, he got involved in several different jobs, including serving in the U.S. Army. In 1956, he changed his name Frank Owen Gehry in part because of the antisemitism he had experienced as a child and as an undergraduate at USC. Together, they have two daughters, Brina Gehry and Leslie Gehry. Frank and Anita got divorced in 1966. He then married Panamanian Berta Isabel Aguilera in 1975. Frank Gehry began his career with Victor Gruen Associates in Los Angeles. In 1957, at the age of 28, he designed his private residence. He moved to Paris in 1961 to work for the architect, Andre Remondet. The following year, he established a practice in Los Angeles, which became Frank Gehry and Associates in 1967 and Gehry Partners in 2001. His early works include Santa Monica Place (1980) and Norton House (1984) in Venice, California.

One of his most notable works was the renovation of his Santa Monica residence. Other popular buildings on which he worked during the 1980s include the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (1981) in San Pedro and the California Aerospace Museum (1984). In the 90’s he began to gain larger National and International commissions.

His first European commission was the Vitra International Furniture Manufacturing Facility and Design Museum in Germany, which was completed in 1989. Other major commissions include Frederick Weisman Museum of Art (1993) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Dancing House (1996) in Prague.
