Despite having a congenital deformity of three fingers in his left hand, Gary Burghoff trained to become a tap dancer and a drummer. Trained at the HB studio in New York, he gained experience acting with the Belfry Players of Williams Bay, in Wisconsin. He came into limelight in 1967, when he portrayed the iconic character Charlie Brown in the original Off-Broadway production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
He befriended the actor Lynda Carter when he joined the band Relatives in 1968 as a drummer. She was the band’s singer. The band played at the Sahara Hotel and Casino lounge in Las Vegas, Nevada, for three months. Lynda carter helped him by casting him in an episode of the hit series The New Adventures of Wonder Woman in 1978, in the episode “The Man Who Wouldn’t Tell.”
He made his acting debut in 1970 by playing the role of Radar O’Reilly in Robert Altman’s MASH, which was adapted from the television series M*A*S*H. He received critical acclaim for his role in the movie and was nominated for six Emmy awards in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He won an Emmy in 1977 for the nominations, which was accepted on his behalf by co-star Alan Alda.
He quit M*A*S*H after seven seasons, citing personal reasons and a desire to spend more time with his family.
