Gennady Golovkin was born on April 8, 1982, in Karagandy in the Kazakh SSR, Soviet Union region to father, who was a Russian citizen, who was a coal miner and mother, a Korean, worked as a lab assistant in a school.
He had great chemistry with his older brothers, named Vadim and Sergey, and his twin brother, Maxim. His real-life idols were his older brothers, who urged him into boxing when he was eight years of age. He started his professional career way back in November 2002, when he held a scholarship with the Olympic Solidarity program. GGG later went on to bag a gold medal beating Christopher Camat at the ‘Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in 2004, which took place in Puerto Princesa, Philippines, from which he qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics which took place in Athens, Greece that particular year. He represented Kazakhstan and won a silver medal in that following tournament.
