Early Life & Biography
Born as Benjamin Kubelsky to Jewish Parents Meyer Kubelsky and Emma Sachs Kubelsky, who emigrated from Poland to America, Benny began to study violin at the age of 6. His parents were highly ambitious about his career as a professional violinist. Benjamin was a dreamer, but being poor at studies, he was expelled from school, after which he joined his father’s business as a saloon owner and a haberdasher.
In 1911, he started playing the violin in local theatres. In 1917, Benjamin Benny left to join his business show to enter the United States Navy in World War 1. After his return from war, he received a sound pressure from another performer Ben Bernie regarding his name since Benjamin had developed a one-person act “Ben K. Benny: Fiddle Funology.” Hence he adopted a sailor’s name Jack and thus the name Jack Benny.
In 1926, Jack instantly fell for Sadie Marks and married the following year. Sadie was called in to fit in the role of a dumb girl and proved herself to be a natural comedienne. She adopted the name of Mary Livingstone and collaborated with Benny throughout his career. In 1932, he was invited into Ed Sullivan’s radio program, uttering his first persuading speech on the radio, “This is Jack Benny talking. There will be a slight pause while you say, Who cares?….”
