James Dyson, born on 2 May 1947 in Cromer, Norfolk, is one of three children. He schooled at Gresham’s School, an independent boarding school, from 1956 to 1965. Unfortunately, his father died of cancer.
Dyson mentions that he excelled at long-distance running not because he was physically okay, but because he had more determination. From 1965 to 1966, he schooled at the Byam Shaw School of Art and then proceeded to study furniture and interior design at the Royal College of Art from 1966 to 1970 before moving into engineering.

In 1968, Dyson got married to Deirdre Hindmarsh and had three children. In 2003, Dyson bought Dodington Park, for £15 million, a 300-acre Georgian estate in South Gloucestershire close to Chipping Sodbury.

Career
After his graduation in 1970, he took a job at Rotork Controls Ltd., Bath, Somerset. His boss, Jeremy Fry, encouraged young talents and motivated them to be innovative. Consequently, Jeremy put him in charge of designing a high-speed landing craft despite Dyson having no prior experience in developing a product.
In 1974, he came up with his first original invention, the Ballbarrow, which was a variation of the wheelbarrow design, a molded plastic hopper on a steel frame, and a spherical plastic wheel. The wheel was to allow for increased maneuverability as compared to a conventional design.
In the late 1970s, he began designing a bagless vacuum cleaner after he faced a problem with his new vacuum cleaner, which was hindering the efficient performance of the appliance.
Dyson developed the idea of using cyclonic separation to create a vacuum cleaner that would not lose suction as it picked up dirt. Furthermore, he tirelessly worked on various designs over the next five years, and finally launched the “G-Force” cleaner in 1983.
In 1993, in Britain, he launched the Dyson DC01 vacuum cleaner, which became the best-selling vacuum cleaner in the country within a couple of years. Subsequently, he started several other improved versions in the following years.
In 2000, his company launched a washing machine, the ContraRotator, which, however, was not a commercial success and was withdrawn.
