In December 1974 Carter announced his candidacy for presidentship as a democratic candidate. He appealed to conservative Christian and rural voters. He travelled 50,000 miles covering 37 states for his hectic campaign. His planks were consumer protection, education, a peace treaty with the Soviet Union and reducing defence expenditure.
