While working at Disney, he suggested the use of computers to make 3D films. Later, he with his friend, Glen Keane came up with the idea of an animated feature film with a computer-animated background. The project was tested with the release of a short film called “Where the Wild Things Are.”

After its success, they finally started to work on “The Great Mouse Detective.” It was based on Thomas Disch’s book, “The Brave Little Toaster.” However, due to significant investment in the mixing of traditional and computer animation, the project was canceled by the head of the Disney studios. So, after being fired from Disney, he met with two of them: “Ed Catmull” and “Alvy Ray Smith” and told them about his project on ” The Brave Little Toaster.” Just within a few hours, all three of them agreed to work on the project and finally came up with the idea of the first computer-animated short film: “The Adventures of André and Wally B.” John then spent a long time at Lucasfilm, developing a mutual relationship with computer scientists. He learned to use many of the software and in return, taught them about the art of film making.

When John came to know about the vast application of software developed at Lucasfilm, he changed his original idea to create only the backgrounds on computers and finally came up with the idea of making everything (including the characters) computer-animated. In 1984, the short CGI film was presented at SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on Computer GRAPHics and Interactive Techniques).

Finally, after 11 years, the work of John and his friend Catmull bore fruit in their life when the first-ever computer-animated feature film, “Toy Story” was released in 1995. After purchasing “Pixar” on 24 January 2006, Disney rehired John and made him the chief creative officer of both “Walt Disney Feature Animation,” and “Pixar,” the former of which was renamed to “Walt Disney Animation Studios.” Since 2007, all of Disney Studios’ films and associated projects are done under the leadership of John as an executive producer.
