John Robert Lewis was born on 21 February 1940 in Troy, Alabama. His parents Eddie Lewis and Willie Mae and are the third born to the family of ten children. John’s parents worked as sharecroppers in the remote Pike County, located in Alabama.
While John was a young boy, he had modest contact with white people, and by the time he was six years old, he had interacted with only two white people all his life. As John Lewis grew older, he started going on trips in town alongside his family. During the tours, Lewis experienced segregation and racism at the public library from the white people.
However, John Lewis had some family members living in northern cities and knew from them that there were integrated schools, businesses, and buses in the North. When John Lewis was an eleven-year-old boy, his uncle went with him on a trip to Buffalo, New York, and later on, became even more acutely conscious of segregation in Troy.
John Lewis first heard about Martin Luther King, Jr on the radio in 1955 and later in the year closely followed the Montgomery Bus Boycott. John Lewis then met Rosa Parks at the age of 17 years and later, when at the age of 18 years met Martin Luther King Jr.

John Lewis was a family man and was married to Lillian Lewis, who died in 2012. The couple had a son named John-Miles Lewis.
In 2019, December, Lewis declared that he had diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas that was at Stage 4. He announced that he felt motivated that medical advancements had made his cancer type to be treatable in most cases, stating that he wanted to return to his job sooner.

In the year 1957, John Lewis attended the American Baptist Theological Seminary situated in Nashville, Tennessee. While at the Seminary, John Lewis researched about the nonviolent protest and assisted in organizing sit-ins separated lunch counters. John Lewis got arrested while demonstrating, and his mother was not happy with him indulging himself in the demonstrations. However, he was dedicated to the Civil Rights Movement and continued to take part in the 1961 Freedom Rides.
Freedom Riders aimed at giving challenges to the segregated facilities encountered at the South interstate bus terminals had been considered illegal by the Supreme Court.
