Philip was born on the 11th of March 11, 1971, in Knoxville city, Tennessee, to Philip Clapp Sr. and Lemoyne Clapp.
He graduated from South-Young High School in 1989 and headed off to California to pursue an acting career.
In 1995, John married Melanie Lynn Cates. Their daughter Madison was born in 1996. However, their marriage did not last, for Knoxville himself filed for a divorce in 2007.
In 2009, Knoxville and his girlfriend Naomi Nelson announced that they were expecting a child. Their son, Rocko Akira Clapp was born in 2009. The two got married in 2010 and had another child, Arlo Lemoyne Yoko in 2011.

After moving to L.A, he appeared in many commercials and as an extra in various shows. When acting opportunities failed him, he decided to write articles himself and present them to different magazines. The skateboarding magazine called Big Brother was intrigued by Knoxville’s idea on testing self-defence equipment himself. Subsequently, this video was filmed and included in a video by Big Brother.
John utilises many of his own ideas in Jackass. Along with his Jackass costars, Knoxville participated in Gumball 3000.
