In 1969, Mahmoud Abdul Rauf was born as Chris Jackson, to a poverty-stricken single-parent family comprising of his mother, Jacqueline Jackson and his two brothers, Omar Jackson, and David Jackson. Abdul has spent most of his early years in a place called Gulfport, Mississippi. At the age of 17, he was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, a nervous system disorder involving involuntary repetitive movements and sounds.
He graduated from Gulfport High School and then enrolled in the Louisiana State University. There he was fortunate to get a chance to play organized basketball. He played his first match against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs basketball team, also known as Dunkin’ Dawgs.

Rauf started with his career as a basketball player right from his freshman years. He joined the college basketball team and earned several laurels in his freshman and sophomore years.
In 1990, he was first selected by the Denver Nuggets team of the NBA. He played for the team until 1996. He changed the team and became part of Sacramento Kings for an exchange of Sarunas Marciulionis. In 1998, he played for the team Fenerbahçe of the Turkish Basketball League. However, he quit the team before the season finished, stating that he has lost interest in the game.
In August 2000, he signed with the Vancouver Grizzlies. In December 2003, he was a part of the Ural Great team of the Russian Basketball Super League. He then joined the Italian Serie A club Sedima Roseto in 2004, and in November 2007, he signed with Al-Ittihad of the Saudi Basketball League. In August 2009, he signed a contract with Basketball Japan League team Kyoto Hannaryz. In July 2010, he re-joined the Kyoto Hannaryz team.
He is currently playing for the Three-Headed Monsters in the BIG3 basketball league.
