Camby played three seasons of the NCAA for the UMass Minutemen. In the 1994-95 season, he made Minutemen reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and was named the Atlantic 10’s Freshmen of the Year.
In the 1995-96 season, he led UMass to the 1996 NCAA Final Four and was also ranked number one. In this season, he won the Naismith College Player of the Year Award and the John R. Wooden Award.
In 1997, Camby was caught accepting $28,000 from two sports agents, and because of this, UMass’s visit from the final four was vacant, and also, the school was to pay the penalty of $151,617 in revenue for the 1996 NCAA tournament. Later on, Camby reimbursed the amount to the school.
In 1998, he was bartered to the New York Knicks in a deal for Charles Oakley. He got a chance to play when the veteran All-star center Patrick Ewing got injured.
