Kassahun Tsegie or Marcus Samuelsson was born on 25 January 1971 in Ethiopia. His father, Tsegie, was a priest at an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. His mother died when he was just three years old. During the 1974 Ethiopian Civil War, he and his sister, Fantaye, were separated from their parents and were later adopted by Swedish couple Lennart Samuelsson who was a geologist, and Ann Marie, who was a homemaker.
After the adoption, their names were changed to Marcus and Linda Samuelsson. He also has an adopted sister, Anna Samuelsson. His birth father still lives in the Ethiopian village where Samuelsson was born.
He went to the Culinary Institute in Göteborg to learn cooking.
