His father was a tank driver in the Seventh Armored Division in World War II. He showed interest in music at an early age and has been to guitar lessons during his school years.

Mark Farner began his career by playing in Terry Knight and The Pack for the period between 1965 and 1966, The Bossmen in 1966 and, The Pack (also known as The Fabulous Pack) for the period between 1967 and 1968. He then went on to form an American hard-rock band, Grand Funk Railroad, in 1968 with Don Brewer on drums and Mel Schacher on bass guitar. Craig Frost joined the band in 1973 who served on keyboards.
Mark was the lead guitarist and the lead singer of the band, while also serving as the songwriter for most of the band’s songs. One of the band’s most famous songs is “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home),” which was released in 1970 and was incredibly successful. He has also written the 1975 song “Bad Time,” which was the last of the band’s four singles to be featured on the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, the group disbanded in 1976.
As a solo artist, he released his first album in 1977, which was self-titled. His other albums were “No Frills” (1978) and “Just Another Injustice” (1988). He is the singer of the popular song, “Isn’t it Amazing,” which earned him a Dove Award nomination and also reached the second spot on Contemporary Christian music charts. He formed Lismark Communications with Steve Lisk. He has his label as well, which is named LisMark Records.
