In 1982 is when Kay began his professional career, with the New York Post, he was a general assignment writer, mostly with sports assignments to college basketball, the National Basketball Association, and the New Jersey Nets. In 1987, he got the Yankees` beat writing assignment. Two years later, he left the position for the Daily News, but still working primarily on the Yankees. In the same year 1989, Kay also served as the Madison Square Garden Network Yankee reporter.
In the year 1992, Kay spent ten years with his partner Sterling as the radio announcers of the New York Yankees team on WABC to 2001. On the basketball season, the two hosted “Yankee Talk,” which was a weekend pre-game radio show, from 1992-1993 Kay hosted his own show on WABC and at the same time continued as a sports reporter on ABC Radio. In 2002, when WCBS got the radio rights to the Yankees broadcasts, he moved to the YES Network on television while his partner remained on the radio. Kay has been on the play-by-play television announcer ever since.
He has worked on YES with different partners, sometimes with three or four different partners in the same season, most of them have been former professional players like Ken Singleton, David Cone, Al Leiter, Paul O`Neill, Jim Kaat, John Flaherty, Joe Girardi, Lou Piniella, and Bobby Murcer.
