Michael Wolff was born on 27 August 1953 n Paterson, New Jersey, the U.S. to parents, Lewis Allen Wolff (October 10, 1920 – February 18, 1984) and Marguerite Vanderwerf Wolff (November 7, 1925 – September 17, 2012). His father worked as an advertising professional while his mother worked as a reporter for Paterson Evening News.
Michael attended Montclair Academy (now Montclair Kimberley Academy), from where he graduated in 1971. Further, he has attended Columbia University in New York City and graduated from Vassar College in 1975. While he was studying at Columbia University, he worked for The New York Times as a copy boy.

Michael Wolff’s career began when he started working for The New York Times as a copy boy. His first article was published in 1974, which was a profile for Angela Atwood, who was one of the founding members of the Symbionese Liberation Army. He then joined the New Times as a contributing writer. He wrote his first book, “White Kids” in 1979, which was a collection of essays. He launched Michael Wolff & Company, Inc. in 1991, which specialized in book-packaging.
In 1998, his book “Burn Rate” was released which had detailed accounts of the success and failure of his start-up company, Wolff New Media. The book became a bestseller.
