Nadia was born in Onesti, in Bacau County, Romania. She is the daughter of George and Stephanie Comaneci. Together with her younger brother Adriana, they were raised in the Romanian Orthodox Church after their parents separated, and her father moved to Bucharest. Her mother enrolled her in gym class since Nadia was full of energy and activity that she couldn’t manage her. Comaneci was debuted at the age of 6 when Coach Bela Karolyi discovered her. She won the Romanian National Junior Championship and the European Championship and American cup as a senior. At the age of 14, she amazed the world after becoming the first woman to score perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics event and won three gold medals and seven perfect medals for the uneven bars, balance beam and individual all-round and bronze medal for her floor exercises.
She won silver during the Romanian national team for her second place in the game. During the Olympic Games in Moscow, Russia, Nadia won two gold for the floor exercise and balance beam and two silver medals for the team competition and individual all-around.
She retired in 1984 and worked as a coach for the Romanian team and later defected to the U.S via Hungary in 1989.
