Orrin Grant Hatch was born on 22 March 1934 and was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His parents are Jesse Hatch and Helen Frances Hatch. His father was a metal lather. Orrin Hatch had eight brothers and sisters, two of them died as infants. Hatch was very much affected by the loss of one of his older brothers Jesse, in 1945.
Growing up, Hatch was very poor and was the first member of his family who attends college, which was Brigham Young University. He received a B.A. degree in History. He is also an amateur boxer. In 1962, Hatch received a J.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Hatch once stated publicly that during law school, his young family lived inside a chicken coop behind his parents’ house. Hatch continued to practice law after he moved to Utah in 1969.

They also have 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He studied at Brigham Young University and the University of Pittsburgh.

In 1976, Hatch was elected to the United States Senate, defeating Democrat Frank Moss. He won re-election, defeating Mayor of Salt Lake City Ted Wilson by 17 points in 1982. He also won in 1988, 1994, 2000, 2006, and 2012.
Hatch started his career as the U.S. senator in January 1977. In September 1989, Hatch was appointed by Senate Republican Leader Robert Dole to negotiate a dispute regarding the financing of President Bush’s anti-drug plan that required spending of $7.8 billion.
Hatch was also interested in serving the United States Supreme Court. He was shortlisted to succeed Lewis F. Powell Jr. on the Supreme Court but could not. Despite that, he vocally supported Robert Bork, who was chosen instead. On January 3, 2015, Hatch had become the President pro tempore of the Senate.
He was the leading figure behind the 1995 Anti-terrorism bill and the establishment of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).
