Peter Sagan was born on 26 January 1990 in Žilina, Czechoslovakia. He has three brothers and a sister. His parents owned a grocery shop in his hometown. His brother is also a professional cyclist and is a member of the Bora–Hansgrohe team.
When Sagan was nine years old, he started riding bikes at the Cyklistický spolok Žilina, which is a small local club in Czechoslovakia. Peter Sagan started his professional career in the year 2008 when the Dukla Trenčín–Merida team hired him. In the same year, he won the Mountain Bike Junior World Championship in Val di Sole. He also took part in the Cyclocross Junior World Championships and finished second. Later, he signed a two-year contract with the Liquigas–Doimo team.
At the age of 19, Sagan participated in his first Pro Tour road race Tour Down Under. He won the first and second stages in the 2010 Paris–Nice road race.
