Rozonda Thomas was born on 27 February 1971 in Atlanta, Georgia, to Abdul Ali and Ava Thomas. She has a sister by the name Marni Ali Williams. She was raised by her mother and only met her father in 1996 when she was 25 years old. Thomas went for her high school diploma at Benjamin Elijah Mays High School, where she graduated in 1989.

In 1991 while she was 20 years old, Thomas became pregnant by Dallas Austin, who was her than music producer. Her relationship with Dallas continued, and in 1997, they bore a son by the name Troy Austin.

Thomas began her career as a dancer for an R&B group called Damian Dame. She later joined TLC in 1991 after replacing the founder group member Crystal Jones. She took the name Chilli so that the group could not change their name. The group gained fame and sold over 65 million records all over the world.
In April 2002, one of the TLC members Lisa Lopes, popularly known as Left Eye, died in a road accident. Thomas and the other remaining member of TLC Tionne Watkins, whose stage name was T-Boz began performing as a duo. In 2009 they played in many countries across Asia. Thomas had started to work on her solo album in 2000, but she later put it on hold so that she could focus on releasing TLC’s fourth album 3D.
