Career

Sarzo discovered a Quiet Riot gig at the Starwood after being turned away from a sold-out Van Halen show at the nearby Whisky a Go Go when he arrived in Los Angeles in August 1977. He described the show as “very ambitious for a bar band,” and he met vocalist Kevin DuBrow afterward, and the two became friends.

Sarzo traveled to New Jersey in the fall of 1977, struggling financially, to join his brother Robert in a Top-40 band named A New Taste. DuBrow called Sarzo while he was in New Jersey in the summer of 1978, asking if he’d want to fly to Los Angeles and audition for Quiet Riot.

The next day, he arrived in Los Angeles, rehearsed with the band, and was offered the position, which he accepted. Despite the fact that he is portrayed on the cover of the band’s 1978 album Quiet Riot II, Kelly Garni, who succeeded Sarzo, played the bass parts.

Sarzo gained to prominence as Osbourne’s bassist from March 1981 until September 1982, after being recruited on Rhoads’ advice. On OzzyOsbourne’sSpeak of the Devil and Tribute live albums, he can be heard playing. Sarzo is listed as the bassist on Osbourne’s 1981 studio album Diary of a Madman’s, while Bob Daisley actually played bass on the recordings.

Sarzo became disillusioned with Osbourne’s excessive drinking after Rhoads died in a plane crash in 1982, and began to doubt his future in the band without Rhoads.

Metal Health was released in March 1983 and went on to become a multi-platinum international hit, kicking off an era of explosive commercial success for heavy metal in the 1980s. Following Sarzo’s departure from Osbourne’s band, a severe schism formed between the two, owing in part to Quiet Riot vocalist Kevin DuBrow’s relentless criticism of Osbourne in the heavy metal press.

When Osbourne and Quiet Riot were on the same bill at the 1983 US Festival, Osbourne got into a drunken rage when he saw Sarzo and punched him in the face before being escorted out by security.

Sarzo established M.A.R.S. with former OzzyOsbournebandmate Tommy Aldridge after leaving Quiet Riot, with whom he maintained a close bond. Both Sarzo and Aldridge were members of Whitesnake from April 1987 to September 1994, when lead singer David Coverdale put the band on indefinite hiatus.

Sarzo formed Sun King in the early 1990s, enlisting vocalist Keith St. John (after of Medicine Wheel, Burning Rain, and Montrose) and guitarist John Lowery (later of Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie). Despite being contracted to Giant Records, the band was dropped after failing to release an album, and Sarzo abandoned the endeavor. In 1992, Sarzo played bass for the fictional band Exorcist in an uncredited role.

Sarzo published Off the Rails in 2006, which is a biographical account of his time in OzzyOsbourne’s band in the early 1980s. It focuses on his memories of Randy Rhoads, an influential young guitarist and close friend who died in a plane crash during the Diary of a Madman American tour in 1982.
