In 1995, he began working as a research computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) Computer Science Department. He joined CMU’s Robot Learning Laboratory as an assistant professor and co-director in 1998. He co-founded the Master’s Program in Automated Learning and Discovery, which eventually became a Ph.D. program in the broad area of machine learning and scientific discovery, as a faculty member at CMU.

Thrun took a sabbatical year at Stanford University in 2001. He returned to CMU as the Finmeccanica Associate Professor of Computer Science and Robotics, an endowed appointment.
