Selma Blair was born in Southfield, in the Metropolitan area of Detroit, Michigan. Her mother is Molly Ann, a judge and her father Elliot I. Beitner, who was an attorney general, active in the U.S Democratic Party and labor Arbitrator. She is the youngest having three sisters, Katherine, Elizabeth, and Marie Beitner. Her parents divorced when she was 23, and her father died in 2012.
Blair joined Hillel Day School, which was a Jewish day school in Farmington Hills and later on Cranbrook Kingwood in Bloomfield Hills. She studied photography and acted in the play The Little Theatre of the Green Goose for one year at the Kalamazoo College. During her teenage years, she wanted to be a ballerina and a horse trainer.

They lived together in Los Angeles until Blair filed a divorce at the Los Angeles Superior Court, claiming they had irreconcilable differences. They divorced in 2006. Later on, in 2010, she began dating Jason Bleick, a fashion designer, and they got their first son, Arthur Saint Bleick. After two years of marriage, they announced they had separated with no revealed reason.
