Lee High School, he left his town Montgomery. He joined “The Smoke Ring.” He later joined “MSFunk,” which was a Chicago-administered outfit. He played music for three significant years. During the two-week club gig that was organized in Chicago, he got noticed by one of the members of Styx.

The music career of Tommy began in true sense in December 1975, when he joined the famous rock band Styx. That was the time when his first album named Styx, Crystal Ball, was released. The album came in 1976 with his own composition and a few other songs that included “Shooz” and “Mademoiselle.” Following the success, Tommy came up with another release in 1977 as The Grand Illusion. It became a super-duper hit album that brought him into the limelight.
The eighth album of Styx as “Pieces of Eight” brought him a lot of publicity. He was appreciated for his brilliant songwriting talent. Tommy also gave his rock-oriented contributions in “Blue Collar Man,” and “Renegade” was the only big hit from the release that was ranked on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart on the 16th and 21st position respectively.
