Her father’s name is Andrew Arthur Allen, who was an orthodontist. Tex, who is Phylicia’s siblings, is a jazz musician, and her sister Debbie Allen is an actress, choreographer, and director, and she also has a brother Hugh Allen. While growing up, her family moved to Mexico, and due to this, she speaks Spanish fluently.
She studied at Howard University, and she graduated magna cum laude in 1970 with a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts. She is also the induced member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
